Special Program Offerings
The demand for skilled tradespeople in Northern Virginia is growing and the plumbing field is no exception.
This program trains students for entry-level positions in the field of plumbing. Plumbers install, repair and maintain pipes, fixtures and other plumbing equipment used for water distribution and waste water disposal in residential, and light commercial settings.
Students also learn how to conduct a job search, maintain proper work documentation, and communicate effectively on the job.
The skills you'll learn go beyond the minimum requirements to become a plumbing apprentice. You'll enter the workforce as a confident, capable plumbing apprentice with a solid foundation to build on.

Gar-Field High School's Plumbing program gives you the theory and practical skills to become an apprentice plumber. Learn to install, repair and maintain plumbing fixtures, systems and equipment. Small class sizes, state-of-the-art facilities and expert faculty make Gar-Field's plumbing program a great choice for skilled trades education.
THE COURSEWORK
Students can enter the plumbing program at GFHS at any point in grades 9-11. The following courses represent a 4-year sequence for a student entering the program at grade 9.
9th Grade - Introduction to Engineering and Design Project Lead the Way (PLTW)
In this foundation course in Project Lead the Way (PLTW), students use 3-D computer modeling software as they learn the engineering-design process and solve design problems for which they develop, analyze, and create project models.
10th Grade – Construction Technology
Students design and build scale or full-size structures and work with projects that help them understand the jobs of architects, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, surveyors, contractors, masons, design engineers, and a variety of other construction careers. They also explore aspects of the construction industry.
11th Grade - Plumbing I
Students are introduced to the plumbing trade; plumbing tools; introduction to plumbing math; introduction to plumbing drawings; plastic pipe and fittings; copper pipe and fittings; cast-iron pipe and fittings; fixtures and faucets; introduction to drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems; and introduction to water distribution systems.
12th Grade - Plumbing II (2 period course)
Students learn to safely assemble, install, and repair pipes and fittings, and are introduced to installing fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems, according to specifications.
*22 spots are reserved each year for the top Plumbing I students interested in pursuing Plumbing II.
12th Grade – Work Release
Students will be exposed to work opportunities with local plumbing companies. Those securing placement and have secured the necessary graduation requirements will have the opportunity.
